About the Author
Marie MacFarlane is a French-born author living in Britain.
After a chaotic break-up, Marie started writing mainly to keep her mind occupied and to stop herself from venting her frustration over current geopolitical affairs on social media. What began as a distraction soon grew into a passion for storytelling.
Marie's writing is shaped by a lifelong fascination with history, identity, and the stories societies tell about themselves. Growing up surrounded by discussions of politics, culture, and the legacy of the Soviet era fostered an early interest in the relationship between official narratives and lived experience. Having lived between different countries, languages, and perspectives, she is particularly drawn to characters who find themselves navigating unfamiliar worlds, whether real or surreal.
Her novels explore themes of memory, belonging, resilience, and the enduring human capacity to find humour in adversity. From dystopian futures and forgotten histories to journeys through the afterlife and eccentric adventures in the Siberian wilderness, her stories combine thoughtful reflection with warmth, humanity, and a touch of the absurd. At the heart of her work lies a fascination with ordinary people confronted by extraordinary circumstances and the choices they make when faced with uncertainty, change, and the unknown.
Drawing inspiration from history, personal experiences, and an enduring curiosity about the world, her work ranges from dystopian science fiction to philosophical and often humorous explorations of the human condition.
She is the author of The Rise of Eurasia and The Journey and is currently writing her third novel, The Boundaries.
Away from writing, she enjoys gardening, learning languages, long walks across the Cornish countryside, and occasionally finding herself deep in a research rabbit hole she never intended to enter.
Marie has three children to whom she dedicates all of her literary work, and a grumpy old cat named Happy who remains largely unimpressed by her owner’s achievements.
